The order also establishes a new international spare parts market at Udi and Ezeagu Local Government Areas, strategically located along the Enugu-Onitsha Road.
Details of the Executive Order
The Executive Order, titled "Designation and Establishment of the Enugu International Motor Spare Parts and Allied Traders Park", mandates the relocation of spare parts markets from residential neighborhoods in Enugu Capital Territory to the new Enugu International Motor Spare Parts and Allied Trades Park in Udi and Ogwofia Owa, Ezeagu LGAs.
Governor Mbah’s Assurance
Speaking at the signing ceremony on Friday, which was attended by leaders of Enugu’s spare parts dealers at the Government House, Enugu, Governor Mbah emphasized that the relocation would address challenges posed by the current market. "This new market is purpose-built with all necessary infrastructure to support a modern trading environment. We have factored in all required safety codes to create a world-class market," the governor stated.
He further assured that construction was progressing rapidly, adding:
"In the next few months, traders will transition to the new international market, which will feature essential services such as a clinic, fire service, and a designated truck park. This move will resolve all existing challenges in the current market."
Governor Mbah also highlighted the residential component of the project, ensuring that traders would have housing within close proximity to their businesses.
Traders Express Gratitude:
The President of the Enugu Motor Spare Parts Dealers Association, Chief Michael Nomeh, praised the governor for fulfilling a long-standing campaign promise."We are excited about the relocation to this modern, international-standard market. Since 1999, many governments have promised this move but failed to deliver. Today, Governor Mbah has made it a reality in less than two years," Chief Nomeh remarked.
Strategic Economic Benefits:
The Managing Director of the Enugu State Investment Development Authority, Dr. Sam Ogbu Nwobodo, described the location of the new market as strategic, pointing out its significance in boosting Enugu’s economy.
"This location serves as a key transit point for traders from the Middle Belt, South-South, Cross River, and even Cameroon traveling to Onitsha. This move aligns with our vision of growing Enugu’s economy to $30 billion."
Dr. Nwobodo also stressed that traders would now own their shops, unlike at Coal Camp where they had to rent.
"The new market is designed as a modern trade hub with residential areas, smart schools, primary healthcare centers, recreational parks, and even a football pitch. It is a world-class facility tailored for today’s spare parts dealers," he added.
Conclusion:
Governor Mbah’s relocation initiative marks a transformational shift for Enugu’s spare parts business, positioning it for greater economic growth, improved infrastructure, and enhanced trading conditions. The project is expected to be completed within the coming months, setting a new standard for markets in Nigeria.
