Telecommunications firm, MTN, has commenced implementation of the 20 percent tariff hike approvef by the NCC ( Nigerian Communications Commission )
This show that the 20GB data plan has been adjusted to N7,500, up from N5,500, while the 15GB plan now costs N6,500, a rise from N4,500.
The development comes after Nigerian Communications Commission on January 20 approved a pegged telecom services tariff of 50 percent. The hike sparked controversies in the Nigerian telecom sector.
While the MTN users argued that the 50 percent hike should be reduced to 10 percent, the Nigerian Labour Congress had threatened a nationwide strike on First week of February 2025, until the Nigerian government stopped it at the last minute.
Towards the end of January this year, the Chairman of the Association of Licenced Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Gbenga Adebayo, in an exclusive interview, said he had hinted that the 50 percent telecom tariff will be implemented by operators as soon as possible.
“The 20 percent tariff hike will be implemented as soon as possible. We are now going through the regulatory requirements of the telecoms tariff hike.
“When the regulatory steps are completed, operators will start introducing the new tariff.”
